Ongoing Rail Projects

MRT Putrajaya Line

MRT Putrajaya Line project that commenced in October 2015 will consists 37 stations with total length of 52.2 km. The terminus stations are Putrajaya and Kwasa Damansara. The first phase of MRT Putrajaya operation will be in July 2021 and the second phase (full operation) will be in January 2023. The owner of the project is MRT Corporation Sdn Bhd.

LRT 3 Line

LRT 3 Line project commenced in November 2015 will consists 20 stations (5 provisional stations) with total length of 37.8 km. The terminus stations are Bandar Utama and Johan Setia. The LRT 3 Line is planned to start operation in February 2024. The owner of the project is Prasarana Malaysia Berhad.

East Coast Rail Link (ECRL)

The East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) is a new passenger and freight rail service that will connect Kota Bharu, Kelantan on the East Coast to Port Klang, Selangor on the West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The ECRL route spanning 640km will run through five states and one federal territory in three sections, namely Section A (Kota Bharu – Dungun), Section B (Dungun – Mentakab) and Section C (Mentakab – Port Klang).

ECRL will help to help link cities and towns as well as stimulate new investment, spur commercial activities, and boost tourism in rural areas. The ECRL is set to reduce travel time from Kota Bharu to the Klang Valley area to approximately 4 hours as compared to an average of 7 hours by road.

Parties of the ECRL project

Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRLSB) is the project and asset owner of ECRL. China Communications Construction Company Ltd. (CCCC) is the Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning (EPCC) contractor for ECRL project. The operation and maintenance of the completed railway shall be undertaken by a 50-50 joint-venture company between MRL and CCCC.

Project Implementation

The ECRL project construction has resumed since May 2019. This project is expected to complete by end 2026.
