​​​Maritime safety includes area of safety of navigation, seafarers, oil spill response and vessel traffic system. These elements are essential to ensure Malaysian waters are safe, secure and to preserve the marine environment.​

​Oil Spill Response

Ship operation carry with it risk of ship incidents and collisions which may lead to oil spills. Such incident will have a negative impact on the marine environment as well as to the maritime community at large.

Based on the geographical position of many States in South East Asia which shared the same water and aided by sea current and weather, wind etc; the possibility of transboundary oil spill is high. Therefore, ASEAN member States at the 20th ASEAN Transport Ministers Meeting held on 28th November 2014 have signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the Mechanism for Joint Oil Spill Preparedness and Response (MoU-ASEAN OSPAR).

The MoU aims to establish a strategic cooperation among ASEAN member states in combating oil spills at sea.In this regards, the MoU will enable ASEAN member States to enhance their capacity and capability in managing large-scale oil spill incident through personnel and assets mobilization. ASEAN member States are also encouraged to exchange knowledge and information on methods, technologies and equipments use for oil spill response in accordance with international practices.
